Cheshire
Cheshire in northwestern England, bordering Staffordshire and Shropshire in the south, Flintshire and Wrexham (Wales) to the west with Merseyside and Greater Manchester to the north andĀ Derbyshire to the East. The two unitary authorities of Halton and Warrington Cheshire are counted only for for ceremonial purposes. Looking at the ceremonial unit the populationĀ in an area of 2,350 square kilometers is almost 1 million people.
In the largely rural county a special kind is of reddish sandstone from which many monumental buildings are built, such as the medieval Beeston Castle, the Cathedral of Chester and numerous 15th Century half-timbered houses, especially in the south of the county.
The Cheshire Cheese is one of the oldest cheeses of England and is now produced inWales and the neighboring counties of Staffordshire and Shropshire. In the late 19th Century the chesese became popular in particular because unlike other varieties it does not mature as long and was therefore cheaper to produce.
